In Victoria, students normally start secondary school when they reach Year 7. Here at William Ruthven Secondary College, our transition leaders ensure the transition from primary school to secondary school is smooth and non-disruptive.
There are many steps to consider when choosing a secondary school, but there are plenty of resources available to help. The Victorian State Government website has information and about what to consider when moving from primary to secondary school, and how to make informed choices when selecting a suitable school.
These include:
- Moving from a government primary school to a government secondary school
- Moving from a private primary school to a government school
- How to choose a school and enrol
- School zones
- School costs and fees
- Tips for starting school
- Travelling to school

If your child currently attends a state primary school, that school will have sent you a Year 6 to Year 7 Transitions: Application for Year 7 Placement Form at the start of Year 6.
If you would like your child to attend William Ruthven Secondary College, you should list it as your first choice of the three preferences you need to provide on this form and return it to your Primary School Transition Coordinator.
If your child attends an independent primary school, email the school at William.ruthven.sc@education.vic.gov.au or phone the College on (03) 9462 2177 to have the enrolment forms sent to you. Send completed forms to William Ruthven Secondary College.
