Report: Lillian Leptos

As we head towards the end of the year, students and staff are starting to feel a little weary. To keep up engagement and energy levels we are all looking for ways to enliven our classes. With the Year 8 students looking at film as text, we have been watching Bend It Like Beckham. As well as discussing themes, symbols and archetypes, we have taken the opportunity to integrate some fun activities.

Noor has brought some traditional Pakistani clothing to class and has explained how it’s worn and its significance. She gave us some understanding of how the appearance of the sari relates to the formality of the occasion and also how some members of the community use appearance to make assumptions about young people and their parents. Bravely, Zack stepped up to help model some of the garments.

Cherbel, a keen soccer player, took the class outside to teach them all how to dribble and shoot, before setting up an impromptu match. Who could have possibly known what an effective goalkeeper Mia would have turned out to be!

The ever helpful Mr Dibben and Nadia De Ceseris gave us a paddock-to-plate experience, as they harvested veggies from the College garden and then helped us to make a lovely vegetable curry, which we ate with pappadums and yoghurt.
